UnLtd and the Big Venture Challenge
Defining brands for social entrepreneurs
UnLtd’s amazing award-winners are looking to scale up to offer increased social impact. Our support helped describe why they do what they do better
UnLtd is the foundation for social entrepreneurs. In 2013, with backing from the Big Lottery Fund, they set up Big Venture Challenge, an opportunity for early-stage social entrepreneurs to attract investment, scale their ventures and increase their impact. Award winners were offered a variety of resources including the advice of a dedicated venture manager and brand support, which is where we stepped in.
Social entrepreneurs juggle twin priorities: attempting to create positive change in society, while running a venture. Like a lot of entrepreneurs, they often lose focus as they grow and get busier. They end up communicating ‘what’ they do and not ‘why’ they do it. We designed a unique guide to reviewing a brand, a poster specifically created for social entrepreneurs, to be used in face-to-face sessions.
Our simple yet highly effective brand diagnostic and guide successfully unravels what any entrepreneur and their venture is about. This helps create clarity and affords the social entrepreneur greater confidence, being able to communicate their ‘why’ and not simply ‘what’ they do. To date, we have worked one-on-one with 18 social enterprises and dozens more through our workshops and seminars. We also developed a train-the-trainer programme to help award and venture managers cascade our brand articulation process to even more social entrepreneurs.
